Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), also known as sodium dodecyl sulfate, is a synthetic surfactant and foaming agent with the chemical formula C₁₂H₂₅NaO₄S.
It appears as a white crystalline powder and is widely used in personal care products, household cleaners, and industrial processes.
Thanks to its dual structure – a hydrophilic sulfate group and a hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain – SLS is highly effective at emulsifying fat and water, which explains its strong cleaning and foaming properties.
